Reading along with us in Psalm 31-40? Here’s today’s reading:

Psalm 40 (ESV)

I waited patiently for the Lord;
    he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
    out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
    making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth,
    a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
    and put their trust in the Lord.

Blessed is the man who makes
    the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
    to those who go astray after a lie!
You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
    your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
    none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them,

  1. 4 Blessed is the man who makes
    the Lord his trust,
    who does not turn to the proud,
    to those who go astray after a lie!

  2. I cannot read Psalm 40 without singing “Forty” by U2. Kind of cool that a modern group “sneaks” in Bible text into their songs. I digress. I have read Psalm 39 and 40, but I spent most of my time in the Bible today reviewing Revelation Chapter 18.

    You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!

  3. Certainly it makes sense that Psalm 40 would follow 39. Because here we have the resolution from a Psalm that ended murky. Isn’t it good to know God has forgiven us? Isn’t it good to know God lifts us out of tough situations where we don’t know what to do or think and He sets us on a rock? He makes us stable!!!! But He also gives us reason to praise and rejoice and that makes us a model for others to follow! Yes we are blessed when we turn and trust Him and don’t look to solve our problems with the world’s solutions.

    And how true it is that if we actually started a list of all the wonderful things God has done, there would be too many things to declare! And that’s why we have to keep telling people about it. Speak of God’s faithfulness and salvation in all its forms. And we have a perpetual need for God’s mercy because trouble can be around the corner. But when we are poor and needy, God is our deliverer!!!
