Proverbs 28 (NIV)

1 The wicked flee though no one pursues,
but the righteous are as bold as a lion.
2 When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers,
but a ruler with discernment and knowledge maintains order.
3 A ruler who oppresses the poor
is like a driving rain that leaves no crops.
4 Those who forsake instruction praise the wicked,
but those who heed it resist them...............Continue Reading

  1. Those who trust in themselves are fools,
but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe. – This is a good reminder, to counteract the popular mantra of society today which is to trust ourselves and to despise religious instructions. It is subtle because at times, it doesn’t feel like there is something wrong with trusting our own wisdom, but the calling of every Christian is to abide in Christ.

  2. Common strains exist in this Proverb and yet each one pricks the conscience or opens one’s eye to the realities of the world and how it is always better to go God’s way than follow a sinful path. A blameless weak is heralded for all it’s benefits and it os better than anything the world may offer when we act selfishly. I love Proverbs 28:6. There are also several here that speak to not taking advantage of people or gain wealth from other’s vulnerabilities or pursue wealth more than godliness. Proverbs 28:19-20 are good examples. The other strain found in this chapter is addressing rulers that are wicked and surreptitious. Both the leader and the people suffer in those instances. Many leaders would be wise to heed Proverbs 28:28.

  3. “Evil men do not understand justice,
But those who seek the Lord understand all.

Better is the poor who walks in his integrity
Than one perverse in his ways, though he be rich.”

Many Proverbs of good vs. evil, rich vs. poor (poor vs poor!), upright vs. lawless.
I am glad that we have these standard truths written down, it is a good reference point for our upside down world. It will stand as a testimony against those who do evil.

“Whoever causes the upright to go astray in an evil way,
    He himself will fall into his own pit;
But the blameless will inherit good.”

  4. Proverbs 28:6 stood out to me as well
Better the poor whose walk is blameless
than the rich whose ways are perverse
