Isaiah 61 (ESV)

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
to proclaim the year of the Lord‘s favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
    to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified..

  1. 1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
    to bring good news to the poor;
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
    to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
    2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
    3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
    to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
    the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
    that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

  2. Jesus created quite a stir when he quoted these verses in Nazareth and then that they were fulfilled in their hearing. It was the Messiah who would fulfill them and that is who Jesus is. But what hope, provision and ministry is found here: helping the poor, the blind, the brokenhearted, the captives, and those who mourn. These are the ones who are close to God’s heart and who He seeks to help. Along with this is also the message of restoration that is a consistent part of the prophets message.

    God would seek to thwart the work of the wicked but embrace and aid the work of the righteous. It is fitting that that would elicit praise from us. ” I delight greatly in the Lord and my soul rejoices in my God”, is the cry of those helped by God.

  3. Isaiah 61:8 (ESV)
    For I the LORD love justice; I hate robbery and wrong; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

    I am grateful that God is in the restoration business. God reminds us that his work of restoration is not based on our action but with his everlasting character.

  4. 3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
    to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
    the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
    that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.❤️
