Reading along with us in Isaiah? Here’s today’s reading:

Isaiah 46 (NIV)

Gods of Babylon
1 Bel bows down, Nebo stoops low;
their idols are borne by beasts of burden.46:1 Or are but beasts and cattle
The images that are carried about are burdensome,
a burden for the weary.
2 They stoop and bow down together;
unable to rescue the burden,
they themselves go off into captivity.
3“Listen to me, you descendants of Jacob,
all the remnant of the people of Israel,
you whom I have upheld since your birth,

  1. Again He reminds us…
    I am God, and there is no other;
    I am God, and there is none like me.
    There is none like Him and I love what He says at that end of the chapter about His salvation coming in HIS timing. Again like Pastor always says He will be glorified through us or in spite of us. He can use the foolish or the wise to accomplish His plan but ultimately it is HIS plan that will prevail. We can fight against it or we can get on board and be a part of something great that He will make happen.

  2. God references the gods of Babylon and shows the inconsistency of calling them gods when they have to be carried, and made and do nothing for the people. In comparison, God has made them/us, He takes care of them/us, He sticks with them/us through the stages of life, and He speaks if only they/us will listen. How incredibly laking the idols are in comparison to HIs magnitude and glory. While they can do nothing, He declares and controls the beginning from the end. He accomplishes His purposes regardless of our opinion or response. There is nothing else that compares, and yet who do we compare Him to? What has the ability to take us from Him? Those are the idols or our lives…..

  3. God has upheld Israel from the beginning.
    Who can they compare Him to?

    “They hire a goldsmith, and he makes it a god;
    They prostrate themselves, yes, they worship.
    They bear it on the shoulder, they carry it
    And set it in its place, and it stands;
    From its place it shall not move.
    Though one cries out to it, yet it cannot answer
    Nor save him out of his trouble.”

    I am always struck by the foolishness of reliance on idols, yet I find myself worrying about and relying on todays idols.
