Hebrews 3 (NIV)

Jesus Greater Than Moses
1 Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. 2 He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. .....Continue Reading

  1. the Israelites disobeyed God and did not see the promised land. As we need to follow God’s path and instruction otherwise we will face the consequence of being outside God’s will for our lives. We are blessed to have the example of Jesus on earth to follow!

  2. The superiority of Jesus as our high priest continues by demonstrating how He is better than Moses (someone Jews would have held in the highest regard). We also get some great applications on how to keep from drifting.

12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness

  3. As the writer of Hebrews exalts Jesus to a predominantly Jewish audience, he shows here that Jesus is better than Moses. Moses was great man, but he was a member in God’s house. Jesus, as the Son of God, is above God’s house. But we must be careful not to fall into the trap that the Jews of the past fell in. We must watch out for an unbelieving heart and continue to encourage each other to e sharp as we follow God. We need to be careful of the deceitfulness of sin that by definition hardens us to God. When we sin, we stop listening to God and pursue our own course. The more that happens the more we, the more we are hardened to the voice and work of God in our lives…..

  4. The sin of unbelief is what separates us from God.
Our relationship with God is a heart issue.

“…Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion”
“They always go astray in their heart,
And they have not known My ways.’”
“Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God.”
“exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”
Again it says, “Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
“So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.”

Pastor always points to his head when he speaks of the heart. I think this is true. I think we associate the “heart” with an emotional response, but it is clear here that the heart is about what you believe…or in this case, don’t believe. When we stray in our heart/mind we are in unbelief. When we sin in our mind/body our heart/mind becomes hardened. I don’t think this negates an emotional response to God, but we cannot let our emotions lead us in our relationship with God…it will lead us astray. Avanell used to have a t-shirt that said, “Follow your heart…….and die” with Jeremiah 17:9 on it. If you look up Bible verses about the heart….it is not good. Best to keep our heart/mind on God’s word which doesn’t change. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

This is a way more complex topic than I thought.

  5. Be confident in Jesus don’t let deceitfulness distract us from our path to Glory and encourage others along this path.

  6. 1Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.
