Hebrews 2 (NIV)

Warning to Pay Attention
1We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment,.....Continue Reading

  1. 17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
God seeks relationship with us so much so that He sent His Son in human form knowing that we may better relate to Him and try to understand the magnitude of the sacrifice being made for us and on our behalf….the physical pain and suffering that we could see.

  2. “For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.”

And as humans we’re called to represent Jesus. A very very high standard!

  3. How true verse 1 is for us today….we too must pay more careful attention to what we have heard so that we do not drift away. Well intentioned people (and some not so well intentioned) are believing and promoting lies that question the Word of God and would seek to lead us away from the standards of Scripture. We need to stay strong and treat them with compassion as we defend and promote the truth. And what a Savior to follow. One who was made like us so as to be able to die for us. And because of His sacrifice, He has been exalted to a place of glory at the right hand of God. He is our standard bearer, example and the authority over those who follow Him and those who don’t. May they accept and learn His better way.

  4. Chapter one demonstrates Jesus’ superiority above the angels. Here we see the beginning of the argument on His superiority above the high priest.

The theme of drifting also comes up; I see this as something that is supremely important to all of us. In the audience’s case, drifting back to Judaism, in ours perhaps drifting back to the world, to our own strength (Galatians 3:3), to legalism, to our sins. It’s so easy to find ourselves skipping our daily time in the word, prayer, fellowship with believers. Like any other relationship, we must remain vigilant and passionate about God.

  5. What an amazing salvation.
Spoken by the Lord, confirmed by miracles, and the Holy Spirit.
God’s detailed plan – send His son to become a man, a little lower than the angels, in order to suffer death for everyone. He became flesh and blood in order to die, in so doing destroying death and the devil.
Jesus is the Captain of our salvation.
He is the merciful and faithful High Priest.

  6. This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

  7. 14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
