Reading along with us in Genesis? Here’s today’s reading:

Genesis 42 (ESV)

When Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” 2 And he said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live and not die.” 3 So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brothers, for he feared that harm might happen to him. 5 Thus the sons of Israel came to buy among the others who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

6 Now Joseph was governor over the land. He was the one who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground. 7 Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke roughly to them. “Where do you come from?” he said. They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.” 8 And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. 9 And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamed of them. And he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to see the nakedness of the land.” 10 They said to him, “No, my lord, your servants have come to buy food. 11 We are all sons of one man. We are honest men. Your servants have never been spies.” … Continue Reading

  1. I read John 19 today and commented there. How interesting that two previously-fearful and very prominent Jewish leaders were willing to be associated with Jesus immediately after His crucifixion.

  2. Reading Daily and posting weekly: Finished the O.T and started N.T. in Matthews

I have just become aware how many times Jesus refers to children and the value they have in His eyes. As I have a “forever child” with Down syndrome (and 5 grand-children) these references particularly touch my heart:

11;25 ” Jesus said, I praise you Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned and have revealed them to little children. Yes Father, for this was your good pleasure.”

18:3 He took a child …”And He said: I tell the truth, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

18:5 “And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me, But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”

18:10 “See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.”

19:13 “Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.

  3. I wonder if this is when Joseph’s brothers realized what they did to him was wrong. Did they live all this time with this lie in peace?
