Genesis 15 (ESV)

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?”Continue Reading

  1. Genesis 15 begins with the first recorded vision in the book of Genesis. The “word of the Lord came to Abram” (Genesis 15:1). Previous encounters with God and His creation simply stated, “The Lord said” but now we have the Lord “speaking” in a vision.

What was this vision, this “Word of the Lord?”

    1. I (The Lord) am your Shield (Genesis 15:1)
    2. Your reward shall be very great (Genesis 15:1)

Abram’s response? “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir” (Genesis 15:2-3)

    The vision continues . . .

    3. This man (Eliezer of Damascus) shall not be your heir (Genesis 15:4)
    4. Your very own son shall be your heir (Genesis 15:4)
    5. Your offspring shall be numbered like the stars (Genesis 15:5)

Then Genesis 15:6 says, “And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.”

    That’s an amazing verse!

The Lord continues making His will known to Abram throughout this chapter.

The chapter ends with the Lord making a covenant with Abram. “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites” (Genesis 15:18-21)

What an amazing chapter to start off this Lord’s day!

God, I trust in Your promises and believe what You have revealed in Your Word!

  2. Love that Jesus makes a beautiful promise of being Abram’s shield and very great reward and then goes through a lengthy process of a covenant so that Abram could know he would gain possession of the land promised by God.

  3. I read John 11 tonight and commented there. I’m more convinced than ever that the truth about Jesus Christ cannot be taught, caught, or proven to those who are unable to see (Luke 16:31).
