Acts 6 (ESV)

Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them.....Continue Reading

  1. What a great picture of walking in step with the spirit-that your oppressors can find no wrong with you, and if they wish to destroy you, they have to make up stories to bring you down.

Like Joseph and Daniel, not only should we keep from giving the devil a foothold, but neither should or oppressors have any ammunition against us. This should be the language of our fathers to our sons, a real nature of living as a godly man empowered by the Holy Spirit. I don’t often see Steven used as an example, but his story likens him to others steadfast and upright in spite of persecution.

  2. We have the first deacons chosen here to free the apostles to focus on the word and prayer. How important this is in any church to have those who serve in various capacities to make sure the word and prayer is not neglected. Notice their qualifications: wisdom and full of the Spirit.

I was also struck by the information that even some priests began to believe. And ditto on what Ryan says about Steven.
